AJ’s blazers have embroidered quotes inside them – what is your fave inspiring quote?

“To plant a tree is to believe in tomorrow” This quote really resonates with me. It’s a wonderful reminder of the future we’ve already invested in through our efforts. No matter what it is in life that I’m seeking motivation within, this quote prompts me to think of the journey I’ve been on to that point, see how far I’ve come and to keep on going!

The best part of co-running a business?

The first thing that comes to mind is the ability to manage my own time and schedule, which I really appreciate. But even more importantly, I’ve met some of my best friends through my businesses over the years, and that deserves a special mention. There’s a strong group of us, all women with our own businesses, it’s great to both see and be a part of.

What’s your shopping philosophy?

I’m not a big shopper—I’m the algorithm’s nightmare. I follow socials and browse but rarely purchase. However, when it comes to buying in person and I say this to our customers too, if I think about something more than once, I know I need it. We can worry about the rest later.

How do you unwind away from Ankole?

When you have your own business, your mind never fully switches off. But I’m reasonably simplistic and find the most contentment being outside in the countryside with my dogs and horses. I enjoy cycling too which is a great way to unwind.

I have a wide circle of friends and I do a lot of retail events with Ankole throughout the year. So, no matter where I travel in the country, I often have friends to stay with while I’m working. It’s a win-win!

Do you have any exciting new plans or products for Ankole?

We’ve recently launched some new Ankole products, now available online under ‘New Arrivals.’ We’re also working on laser engraving, which will allow us to personalise items like our shoehorns and barware, making them perfect for milestone birthday gifts. We aim to launch this personalisation option online later this summer.

Another inspiring woman in business?

Somebody I follow and have admired within business is Katie Cardew. I don’t know her personally but have seen her brand grow over the past couple of years. I admire her ability to build a thriving brand which excels within retail, wholesale and online (most of us are trying to master just one of those!). All while being a mother AND establishing a secondary business as an interior designer. Her style is unique, bold and timeless all in one, and I love it!

What does your dream blazer look like?

My dream blazer would be the Anna James double-breasted blazer in dusty pink. I wear a lot of pink, and this particular shade is absolutely perfect for this season. The elegant design and flattering cut makes it a versatile piece. It’s my next investment piece to add to my collection for sure!
